Presentation of PYPX!

I'm right now, a little bit worried about the things we have to do for the exhibition because we have so many things to complete! One of the most important things to complete was the presentation and the presentation board. For the presentation we chose to write the whole script instead of writing the contents. While presenting, I'm going to talk about what we did in music, art and P.E class to represent the issue we are inquiring. For presentation board I don't have idea about unique ways to show our music, art and P.E piece, so I think I have to look at some of the other display board in the google to get some inspiration. Now I will go and get some idea for the display board!

Assembly about Action

http://school.discoveryeducation.com
/clipart/images/school-assembly-color.gif
Today we had an assembly for us to talk about the action we prepared and planned to take. For our action we are going to teach grades 1 to 4 how to recycle with plastic bottles and together we are going to make things like sandclock, pencil basket, etc. It will be in April 2th for grade 1 and 2 at morning recess and April 3th for grade 3 and 4 at lunch recess which is this Thursday and Friday. We are going to do it at the playground in grade 1 and 2, and in the field for grade 3 and 4. I am not sure if we can have enough bottles for all of them, but I think it's enough because we asked cafeteria to help us collect the bottle and also Yunjin said she would bring the bottle with her to the school when I asked her.

Art, Music and P.E

BHA Pond In Front
 Of School Center
Today I will write the blog about Art, Music and P.E for exhibition. First of all, in art we started writing process journal. In process journal we were told to finish the page of artist intent, planning, list of material, sketch, location picture until next Wednesday. I was not sure about the date we are going to put the ice in the pond and where to put the camera, so we went to school center and looked for the place. Also, to make sure about the date of putting the ice in the pond we emailed Mr. Hammond. Secondly, we made a first draft of our music, but Ms. Lau said that it has really good melody, but it seems like they're not connected all together. So we choose to make a new song with a simple melody, but with a different rhythm. Lastly, in P.E class our shadow dance was not working really well. At the start, we planned to make polar bear but it was so hard to make and didn't looked like a polar bear. Our next plan was making an ice mountain and slowly going down to show it is melting but it didn't worked well either. Next time I think we should put more effort to P.E project.

Transdisciplinary Skills

http://www.startupist.com/wp-
content/uploads/2014/12/dec.jpg
Social Skills- Group decision making
I used this skill today in music class when we were choosing our note for the music we are going to make. We first, record 4 notes and listened to it. Then we voted to figure out which could be our final 4 notes. I think this skill is useful because we need this skill to make a fair and easy decision.

Thinking Skills- Dialectical thought
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Wlki5BcWAk4/
VMhfXQRyVmI/AAAA
AAAACe4/ulkKdc-0mVg/s1600/1.png

I showed this skill when I was drafting the writing because I had some idea that was similar to the other idea. So I chose to take one out and put just one in because it is not interesting if you listen to similar idea again. I think this skill is more important when we are writing an essay.
http://www.opsweb.org/resource
/resmgr/blog/pm_survey.jpg

Research Skills- Organizing data
I showed this skill when I was writing the informative essay because I had some of the cause and effect in the 1st question note taking sheet. So in the planning sheet I organized it and wrote the fact again in the right order and space. I think I have to work on organizing the research and putting into the right space when I am recording my facts not after researching it all.

Communication Skills- Writing
http://images.clipartpanda.com/student-
writing-clipart-student_homework_111596.jpg

I used this writing skill when I was writing the informative essay, art intent and music intent. Also, I wrote the script for Monday assembly too. I felt most hard to write the script because I have to give everyone the fair amount of script to say. I think writing an informative essay is easy because I already have the research so I just have to turn that statement into the sentence.

Action and Buddy Class

http://www.education.com/activity
/article/Leprechaun_Magic_Pouch/
Since our topic is 'Global Warming' we chose teach the student how to recycle and make things with them. It will in foyer between junior pods and it will be at 2015 March 30th (G1~G2) and 31th(G3~G4) at lunch recess time. It will be free and they will get to make different things with different material. Also, they will have different level because grade 1's can't do complicated things, but grade 4's will get bored if they have to do the easy things.

activity/article/Sand_Clocks/
Tomorrow we have a buddy class and in that time we are going to teach our body about the keywords (global warming, land pollution, air pollution, water pollution, reduce, reuse, recycle, nature) and we are going to do the same activity we planned to do for action with grade 1 too. I was worried if those keyword we chose will be so hard to grade 1 so we made picture to go with it and we planned to do matching game with pictures and the words.

Start Drafting!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCmzoYxl9LA

Today I started drafting informative writing based on my research. I've been researching about cause, effect and solution of land pollution so my writing was about that topic. I started off with an outline and when I finished the outline of 1st paragraph I moved to writing of the first research question. Ms. Archie told us that we have to put the bibliography into our writing piece but in alphabetical order. Also, as we did in light and sound unit we had to put pictures, diagram, graph or illustration to help the writing. The rough draft was due on Friday, so I think we have to use the time wisely to get the rough draft done.

Writing about Land Pollution

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hdjvXA2DH-8/
UgB3xs7ICjI/AAAAAAAAAWM/
LxYTWHFSmYU/s1600/hand_writing.jpg
Today we started to discuss about writing, we are  going to write and what type it can be. First of all we  looked at 2 types of writing and filled up the Venn  diagram to compare and contrast the writing piece. One  was informative writing and one was persuasive writing.  Differences were that the information has more fact and  no opinion, but persuasive also had the facts but had  more opinions.
After looking at two different types of writing I  thought writing informative writing could be better to  show my research because I have more interesting facts  than the prevention or solution to persuade the reader to  do it. Also giving more fact to the reader could be better  for the readers to understand my issue and try to solve it.

Field Trip and Writing Plan

https://www.pinterest.com/
pin/62487513554136659/
Since I didn't write the blog yesterday about what I did, today I'm going to write about yesterday and today exhibition time. Yesterday we went to Sustainable Environmental Education Center. It was a chance for us to research more interview someone in that center. Going there really helped me because my research was about land pollution and that center talked about trashes that made me understand how landfill causes land pollution.
Today we didn't have much exhibition time because we had a middle school transition at the morning from after lunch. After lunch, for exhibition we wrote plan for the writing piece. For me it had been just like a mind map of what I had researched about land pollution, but for others, they just wrote down with bullet point and some used graphic organizer to help. I thought about what type of writing I'm going to write and I've thought that explanation writing or report writing could be good for me because I am going to write about land pollution and explain it.

Transdisciplinary Skill

Social Skills- Cooperating

I showed this social skill yesterday, when we were thinking idea for an art piece and writing our artistic intent. I think we made that idea of making shapes (Cities on Jeju) with ice and putting into pond to let it melt, because we all cooperated to make the result. I had an idea of putting ice in the pond and let it melt and others had their own idea and the mixture of all those idea was our final decision.

Thinking Skills- Evaluation

I used this skill while researching because I've used lot's of different sources and I had to put just important things and things related to my topic to research note. I think I used this skill the most today when I was summarizing the note from our field trip today. Next time I would try to use better source, so that I don't have to evaluate all the sources.

Communication Skills- Reading
I showed this reading skill when I was researching because I got lot's of information by reading articles, databases and books. I think this skill is important because we need good reading skill in order to research with higher level sources that has more detail on it when we are researching with articles, databases and books.

Researching Skills- Recording Data

I used this skill also when I was researching. I found lots of different information from lots of different sources, so I needed this skill to put the information organized. I sometimes used a picture or diagram to understand more about my topic. Next time I would also draw that picture or diagram to my notebook to look at it again when needed.

Art makes me get rid of researching!

https://www.pinterest.com/
pin/506162445596326408/

Today we did lots of research that really made me tired. I  researched about causes, effects and solutions of land pollution. I  just used 2 or 3 pages of my researched note each, but I thought it  would have enough information, and also our group is going field trip  tomorrow so I think I could research more tomorrow. Because I was  tired of researching it was really good when I heard that it was art  time. In art class we finished our artist intent and planned what we  are going to make. Our final idea was making Jeju island that has  high building with ice and then putting that to the pond in front of  the library and putting small ice in there to show the situation of  sea level going up because of global warming. I wanted the person  viewing to see and feel sad about the fact that global warming  became a real serious problem that can impact many living things.

Exhibition for Today

http://web.peanutlabs.com/wp-content
/uploads/2013/07/research-1.png
Today our exhibition started with researching. I researched question 2 and 3 with book and website. The website Gyubin found was good website that had lots of different facts. Using that website, I answered two of my research questions. At the morning recess we had a mentor meeting. With ms. Matthews we talked about action piece and what can we do for that. Also, I wrote 3 different interview questions which was one of the 'what next' things we said that we had to complete. Tomorrow I will research all of my questions with different kinds of sources, but without website because I used website so much today. I will try to use databases for tomorrow research and keep siting my source and put it into the bibliography.

Art and Music Piece for Exhibition

http://webdev.loop.ph/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2014/02/IMG_7610.jpg
In Music and Visual art time during our process of exhibition we are going to create a music composition and ephemeral art to represent the central idea. For this morning we planned on what we are going to do with four circles. In the 1st circle we wrote our central idea (Humans have a responsibility to reduce the impact of global warming on living thing). For the 2nd one we wrote the feeling and emotion about our topic, the central idea (sadness, hope, angry). For the 3rd circle we wrote genre and element of music and art (rhythm composition, art installation) and for the 4th circle we wrote what material or tools we need (ice, water, Garageband, sound). It was exciting to me that we could create our own music and art piece, with cool material such as Garageband or ice and water. The picture on the top is an example of an ephemeral art piece which means that will not stay there forever.

3rd Mentor Meeting

http://d2vhierclfllnw.cloudfront.net/
wp-content/uploads/2014/08/mentor.jpg
It was the 3rd mentor meeting we had with Ms. Matthews. We were up to researching based on our three research questions and planning for our field trip. Our next step is making interview question for our field trip with each of our research questions. Also, we could send the interview questions to the interviewer if needed. Ms. Matthews helped me with researching by giving me lots of synonyms I could use instead of land pollution. It really helped me when I was trying to find the book on library because I find the book about acid rain which was one of the words Ms. Matthews gave to me. It is really nice to have a mentor teacher who could help me well through our exhibition process.

Transdisciplinary Skills

This is what I think I used during this week exhibition time.

https://miscellaneousme.files.
wordpress.com/2013/07/slide4.jpg
Social Skills- Adopting a variety of group roles

I think I showed this skill when our group was researching about field trip because I had to research, record the fact (place, time available, thing in there that we can look at), and also had to call because Zhaoying and Nancy can't speak Korean and we have to speak in Korean with the person we were calling because they couldn't speak English. I think next time I will do less thing and give more chance to other people in the group to do some more work.

Thinking Skills- Synthesis

http://f.hypotheses.org/wp-content/
blogs.dir/1048/files/2012/11/LayerTypes.png
I used this skill when I researched about land pollution because I looked at different sources like books, website, database and also image. I think using different sources is important because if we look at website and find it again with the image it helps me to understand more about that topic I am researching about.

http://173.239.45.59/~threedpe/wp-content/
uploads/2012/01/shutterstock_73525639-plan.jpg
Researching Skills- Planning

I think I especially showed this skill when I were planning for our field trip and making our interview question for the interview. I planned where and how to go to field trip, but also what I will be going to say to that person and what is some of the questions I am going to ask when I got to interview them.

Self-Management Skill- Informed Choices

wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/
uploads/sites/11/2013/07/Good_Better_Best.png
I used this skill when I was planning about the field trip because I looked at the website, call the center to make the right decision about where we are going to go. I thought this skill is important because the this kind of decision will make our experience easier or harder.

Field Trip

http://www.romefloyd.com/Portals
/0/City/images/ECOCenter1.jpg
I am really excited now, that we could go to field trip next week! We find a good place to visit and experience about our topic. The website of the place we are planning to visit is http://www.jejueco.or.kr/ and it is a place where we could have a tour with the tour guide. The topic of the tour is 'Where does our trash go?' and also we can experience different kind ways to create something with trashes but useful to us such as bottles, cardboard, paper and more. I think this place is a good place to visit because our central idea is about global warming and trashes also cause global warming when we burn the trash. We reserved the time from 9~11 at morning the tour and Nancy's dad are going to take a tour with us and take us back to school before lunch so we could have lunch at school. I hope we could get more information when we go on this trip and could use it when we start writing our essay.

Start Researching!

http://iserotope.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/research-paper.jpg
For today exhibition, we started on researching. We started with finding books at the library, but I was unable to find the books I needed for my research. Fortunately, I got good information on Britannica School and also from other websites. Before I start looking and writing notes, I always put the bibliography into my document, but it was challenging when I had to put the bibliography of books. The book was not found so I had to type manually and it took longer time than just copy and pasting URL code.
At recess time we had a mentor meeting with Ms. Mattews. She gave me different synonyms of land pollution (Landfill, Chemical Waste, Acid Rain, Fertilizers, Peshicides), when I told her that I couldn't find books in the library related to my topic. Our next step is researching with primary sources, not just secondary. Also, we have to take action too!

Research Question Complete!

http://www.eslprintables.com.es/previewprintables
/2010/oct/19/thumb10192327282800.jpg
Today we complete writing our three main research questions. I will be researching about causes of land pollution and how it impacts global warming. Zhaoying will research about air pollution and water pollution for Gyubin. Nancy will research about global warming and at the last we are going to put together all of our ideas to finalize the idea about our central idea and lines of inquiry. In those three main research questions we had each of the key concept shown that was causation, form and responsibility.
After writing down three research questions, we  created google doc on our drive for bibliography which is writing down the sources we used to answer question. Then we went into http://library.branksome.asia/ to find the book in our school library about the main idea I am researching and write the title and call number to quickly find the book on library that we need in order to start researching.

Research Skill Workshop

Bibliography. Digital image. N.p., n.d. Web.
/articles/MSK/images/0087.png>.
Today Ms. Gasperini came to us to talk about bibliography we usally put into our research note instead of just URL. For example, below is a bibliography I created in EasyBib for our exhibition website.
"2015 Grade 5 Exhibition." 2015 Grade 5 Exhibition. N.p., n.d. Web. 06 Mar. 2015. <http://g5bhaexhibition2015.weebly.com/>.
I thought it was pretty cool because EasyBib website find the publisher, date published, date accessed and article title when I just copy in the URL if it's shown. We could find this for website but also for digital images or illustration too.
Mrs. Berghuis also came to us to talk about bibliography, but with database not website or images. It was so much different with the bibliography because we had to put all of the information such as database, year published and few more. But the difference between other bibliography was that we don't have to put in the URL. It was good to learn about this because it would be important things
to remember while researching on exhibition.

Transdisciplinary Skills

Below is 4 Transdisciplinary Skill I showed throughout this week during our exhibition time.

Social Skills- Cooperating
http://blogs.hrhero.com/oswaldletters/wp-content
/blogs.dir/10/files/2013/07/Cooperation.jpg

Today with our group, we were making lots of questions based on each of the key concept and making last lines of inquiry. When we were making the question, I showed the Transdisciplinary Skill, cooprating. This work was important so we all had to come up with our own ideas so we all taked turn to share ideas and when someone is struggling to make question, we helped her by using the question chart which included the question starter like what or how.

Research Skills- Formulating Questions
http://espei.com/wp-content/uploads/
2013/05/equipmentprotection3.png

This Skill, formulating question was shown by me today. As I said at the top our task for today was making each of the question based on our key concept. We were all expected to create at least 1 of the queestion and I got to achieve the expectation and I made 3 of them. I also helped Nancy to create the question because Nancy was being so quiet and didn't shared her own idea.

Communication Skills- Nonveral Communication

http://onlinelearningtips.com/wp-content/uploads
/2013/03/communication-importance.jpg
Within the group, we have Zhaoying and Nancy who are Chinese. So while communicating sometimes Zhaoying and Nancy wouldn't understand some of the things we are saying and they have something they want to tell us but there is problem speaking in english. So we sometimes use google translation but other times we use our hand to try to explain it. I think using google translation is not best thing to use as communication tool and I think I would be better if we used our hand or body with easy words to communicate.

Self-Management Skills- Fine Moter Skills

Apple Fontbook Arial Rounded MT Bold

This week I used the fine moter skills to keep my exhibition notebook well-organized and clean. While lots of others rushing I taked time to try neat hand writing. I sometimes had to quickly write it down from somewhere but then, I erased and re-wrote to keep it neet

First Meeting with our Mentor

https://media.licdn.com/mpr/mpr/p
/3/005/06d/0bc/1bb8566.jpg
Today at morning recess, we had the first meeting with our mentor, Ms. Metthews. Before we went to have our meeting we complete the part where it says "Where are we up to?" We finished developing our central idea, chose the key concept and we wrote down our essential agreement.  With Ms. Metthews we filled the part where it says "What next?". Our next step is creating our lines of inquiry and starting to communicate more with our group. The action we will take to communicate more with our group is making sure that everyone in our group is putting our own idea into our exhibition. Ms. Matthews said that it would be harder to communicate within this group because there are 3 languages (English, Chinese, Korean) we speak to communicate in our group, but we have to try our best to put everyone's idea into our group work. After hearing those things I've thought I would need to speak less while doing the exhibition and hear others opinion more.

Creating Central Idea, Key Concepts and Essential Agreement

Today our focus for the exhibition time was making up our team essential agreement and working on developing our central idea and choosing three of the key concepts that matches our central idea.
Every group member suggested at least 1 of the IB learner profile or PYP attitude that they thought was most important. After we had conversation about it we came upon a list and that is : cooperate, communicate, creative, principled, enthusiasm and open-minded. Using those words we made final essential agreement which is 'It is important to cooperate because we can work together by communicating and being open-minded. We will also be enthusiastic to be creative but always principled.
We developed our central idea we started yesterday and our final central idea was 'Humans have a responsibility to reduce impact of global warming on living things'. And the key concept for this exhibiton is Form, Responsibility and Causation. The casuation is relate to the part where we will be inquiring the impact of global warming on living thing and responsibility will be connected to the part when we inquire about the responsibility towards the global warming.

Introducing Group Member and our Mentor

http://pixabay.com/en/we-unity-cooperation-together-566327/
After finishing our Korean class at first period, we had time for Mr. C to introduce our group members and our mentor for this whole exhibition. I was excited to meet our exhibition group and our mentor too. I was in the group with Gyubin, Nancy and Zhaoying. It was good that I could work with Nancy who newly joined grade 5 today. Our Mentor was Ms. Matthew and I like it because I think she could help us through our exhibition process very well and coach us what we have to do now and next.

After the recess, Mr. Secomb visited grade 5 to speak to us about creating central idea and lines of inquiry. Our group members were all interested in the big concept which was Right and Responsibility so it was easy to create the central idea. More specifically we chose global warming as our topic and pollution, deforestation for the supporting ideas. We chose four words that could make our central idea and that is : global warming, living things, impact and responsibilities. We didn't yet look forward for creating just right phrases and sentences for central idea but we are going to try it out for our next exhibition time.
